Most of us don't need an excuse to snack - we are hungry, so we eat! Well, I'm here to tell you that snacking (when done properly) could help your wallet and even your weight!
Sounds crazy, right?
Think about it. When you make a nice dinner, there is usually some filling component - tofu, pasta, protein, ect. Have you seen meat prices lately? Filling up on a dinner that includes meat would get expensive, fast! Tofu isn't cheap, either. That leaves .. pasta! Pasta remains affordable, but at what cost? (Your waistline, that's what.)
What I'm proposing is that we ditch large meals and pick up healthy snacks.
Many weight loss gurus suggest eating several small meals rather than three large ones. I've tried, really I have, but it's simply not that easy! In writing it sounds simple, but it's hard enough to prepare three meals - I would go crazy trying to prepare five or six meals. Even with proper planning (and ingredients) preparing several meals takes time. With our busy schedules, it simply isn't practical.
Instead of three regular sized meals, perhaps try three smaller meals - with snacks in between. Remember, for this plan to work, you have to eat healthy snacks. Chips and cookies will help you put weight on fast! Keep healthy snacks on hand and ready to go. You can have a day or two when you prep the snacks you want - and maybe keep them visible in the refrigerator. That way, you see them first rather than sugary snacks. They also fit into your schedule, because they can be grab and go.
This helps your wallet, because you aren't filling up entirely on meals that include expensive ingredients - like meat and cheese (or tofu). Instead of that meal you made being for only one night, it could be leftovers for another night. You just doubled the servings, and saved yourself the trouble of preparing a meal a different night! It helps your waistline, too - you keep your metabolism working, you don't get hangry, and you are filling up on healthy foods rather than pasta or other no-no's.
Note that you should snack reasonably - that is, don't be constantly snacking. Then you are paying more for food, and hurting your metabolism. Instead, keep it to a few small, healthy snacks during the day.
Are you convinced?
Well, this list wouldn't be complete without a list of a few snacks you could include for a healthy snacking regimine. Here are a few of my favorites:
