The more I run and the longer (further) I run, the more I realize how important having the right gear is. Shoes, obviously. But when you're needing motivation after the first 3 miles, the best headphones, music and everything else connected to your body is equally, if not more, important. Here are my top picks for essential running gear, equipment and even my favorite app for workout music.
Once you find a shoe brand that you love, it's hard to switch. These are my go-to running shoe and I'll buy them in whatever color they're available in as long as they have my size when I need to refresh my feet.
I cannot run without music. RockMyRun is a free app that you can download which combines your favorite style of music with the beats per minute and your running speed to keep you moving.
I definitely need one of these. The previous running belt I owned did not have the zipper pouch which is ideal during marathons when you need somewhere to put your phone, key and id as well as your gel packs and, of course, water.
Finding the right pair of running shorts can take some time (and miles), but when you find the right fit and feel, you buy them in bulk and in every color available.
You'll have to experiment with a few of these to find your favorite flavor. Some are of course better than others, in my opinion, but they definitely provide the fuel you need to keep you energized for your longer marathons. And they're super tiny and light to throw into the pocket of your shorts or waistband.
Just as it's important to stretch and train before a race, it's equally important to have things like this on hand to aid in muscle recovery after a strenuous workout or long run.
When you wake up before the sun to get in your morning run, having a motivational greeting staring back at you (from your closet) might be just the extra push you need to get out there (and not back to bed).
Inspiration comes in many forms. Mine just happens to come in a beer mug. ;)
I love picking out bright colored gear to wear on race day. It makes it much easier for your loved ones to spot you in the crowd as you make your way toward the finish line. Of course, fun sayings like this one help put a smile on your face while running since you're bound to get people commenting on it when they see it.
I was hesitant to try this out the first time because I thought it might be uncomfortable...turns out, with the proper fit, you don't even notice you're wearing it. I was able to toss my key in the front pocket and my ID and cash (you just never know) in the other. I don't think I'll ever run without it now.
I hopped onto the Fitbit bandwagon a little later than everyone else, but having something (besides an app on your phone) to track your progress makes total sense. I love that the brand has different designs and price points for every level of fitness.
Having a proper set of speakers in your ears is important while running. This is one of the top brands (with super reasonable pricing) I've used for working out.
You haven't lived until you found the perfect panties for working out. These are awesome.
You might not be the type of person who can run in just their bra, but you'll definitely want one that you feel comfortable in, no matter what you're wearing over it. Sweaty Betty knows what's up and how important it is to keep those boobies from bouncing too much while you're on the go.
Yeah, $25 socks make sense when you care about your feet and plan to run a long-distance.
You definitely want UV protection in your SPF when you're running outside for hours. Protect your skin!
