I love having granola on hand but especially in the spring and fall when I spend hours out in the woods behind our home looking for wild mushrooms. Granola is a healthy and delicious snack, easy to take on the go. It provides plenty of healthy energy and helps to keep the blood sugar stable even if I do stay out there for hours. This is helpful when your entire family is hypoglycemic. Yes, you can buy it at the store, but you really don't need to. Here are my reasons for making our own.
1.) Simple and Easy
Really, it is! Once you get these steps down you can experiment and come up with the perfect granola for your taste and add in other heart healthy super foods to make it even more nutritious.
2.) It Tastes Better Then Store Bought and Will Contain Less Sugar
It's no secret that companies use the cheapest supplies they can find, add in a ton of sugar, artificial flavours, dyes and preservatives to extend shelf life. Home made is healthier, tastes better and you are in control the ingredients. This is a huge bonus if you have food allergies or your under doctor's orders to avoid gluten!
3.) It Cost Less To Make You Own
I tend to be pretty frugal about stuff. I have to be! We live on one Income, so saving cash is a huge thing around here. Even if you factor in the cost of certified gluten-free oats i is still cheaper than buying gluten-free granola from the store. With prices on granola bars between $6.00 - $8.00 for a box of 4, making your own granola is the leaxt expensive option.
4.) It's Great For More Then Just Snacking
Granola is amazing on its own or even in bars and makes a perfect take along for a healthy snack when you're on the run. You can also use it to dress up yogurt or be turned into hot cereal, perfect for a cold winter day when those extra carbs will help warm you up. Since its loaded with good stuff, you won't feel guilty.
5.) It Doesn't Have To Be Fattening!
In fact, when you make your own, you get to decide just how much fat you would like, helping you control your calorie intake and still enjoy a bit of granola goodness. Since you know what’s going in it, there are no surprise "hidden" fats to worry about. Keep in mind not all fat is bad...Some are very good for you and making sure you have fats in the diet helps your body process all those vitamins and minerals.
6.) It's Easy To Add in Super Foods
Flax seed, chai seeds, sunflower seeds, dried fruit and berries, nuts, toasted millet, coconut oil and even things like turmeric can be added to the granola to increase fiber, nutrition, and makes adding things into the diet easy!
7.) It's Healthy and Good For You
Home-made granola is full of healthy whole grains. Add in some dried fruit, nuts, healthy fats, and a bit of honey or maple sugar to sweeten it and its becomes an even healthier and more satisfying treat everyone will love! Best of all, even those picky eaters tend to fall in love with it!
