It's getting colder. The seasons are ch-cha-changing, and when the rain, wind, snow and sleet start up, you'll need to know what to binge on! No, not food. Great television shows that have long since left our airwaves, but still live through the DVD technology.
Hey, Binge on These!
The West Wing
Hands down, the most well-written show to grace our television sets. I ache for this show to show up on my television. However, for some reason, I can't find the repeats anymore. It saddens me no other show has come close to the genius of The West Wing, but instead of crying about it, I pop a full season into my DVD player and let the good times roll.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't the world's most amazing actress. The show was campy, and total brain candy. I loved every dang minute of it, and once in a while, I catch it on an obscure channel on my FiOS network. However, for me, I like to know I can watch any episode at any time. It's comforting to know, Mr. Pointy can be called upon late at night when I'm having one of my famous insomnia episodes.
Curling up with Buffy, and her gang of vampires, fellow slayers, Watchers, werewolves, witches, and ghouls, is where it's at. I mean, she had style and could kick ass like nobody's business. Plus, who doesn't love Spike, the bleached blonde stud vampire with a British accent?
A show so far fetched, as far as what people can afford to live in on the salaries of a coffee house waitress, you had to fall in love with it. Everyone has friends like Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, and Monica. If you're lucky, you have friends like these, I should say.
Every week I laughed until my stomach hurt, and totally didn't care that Monica got to live in that apartment on a chef's salary, by lying to her super! We gotta do what we gotta do. Rent control, and leases, just have to be handled with lies, right? Where did the super think her grandmother was all those years? Hiding in the closet?
Doesn't matter. I catch the repeats sometimes, during the mid-evening hours, when I'm allowed to check out the television. I watch them over, and over. Definitely a great way to have a laugh after dealing with homework with the kids.
Will & Grace
Two gays. A red head. And a drunk. It's the perfect way to spend hours of time in front of the television. Karen and Jack made the show a hit, for sure. Their chemistry, and the fact that Karen said the most offensive things, and we laughed because we knew it was A JOKE? It just doesn't happen anymore on television. Everyone's always getting butt hurt over everything.
It was just great comedy, and their recent reunion to support the election this year, proves they are still loved.
If you're not into science fiction, it's okay. You'll still be into this show. It was more a show that let you get lost in the dialogue, and chemistry, of the core cast. Olivia, Walter, Peter, and Astrid - they made music every episode. The dry humor, and the one liners out of Walter's mouth... MAGIC.
Plus, who doesn't love to explore parallel universes? It's fascinating, and JJ Abrams has an insane mind that makes this kind of subject matter believable. Every episode, I walked away shaking my head, thinking "SHIT, this makes total sense. I know it's got to be real!"
Sex and the City
Set in New York. Four friends, who are each others' soul mates. Men, they come and go, but these ladies were a solid foursome. Didn't matter what went down between them, or in each of their lives, they were RIDE OR DIE bitches. We all need friends like this in life.
Watching it on screen made a young girl, without a lot of chick friends, believe there was ride or die friends out there of the same sex. It took me a lot longer to find a couple, but I've got them now. Mine aren't all friends with each other, too, but many of them are.
It's just a great show to sit down, with some sangria and guacamole, and watch on a snowy day. It reminds you there are real girl's girls out there. They watch out for you, are there for you no matter how stupidly you behave and love you unconditionally, but will tell you when you're acting the fool.
Let's face it. If you live in a cold part of the world, winter's coming. Snow is coming. We're going to have days where we just want to snuggle in bed, with a great adult beverage, amazing snacks, and some great shows to binge on. The snow will be there tomorrow to shovel, trust me.
