We return once again to the dastardly numbers game. On our previous installment, we covered the egregious misinformation that certain TV manufacturers concoct for Contrast Ratio and Color Gamut. This time, we’ll cover two more of the top ways that they like to pull the wool over your eyes.
First up is Response Time. Response Time is a measurement of the time it takes for a pixel on the display to go from black to its peak white and then back to black. What it’s purported to measure is the screen’s fidelity from frame to frame, and how much it eliminates the motion blur that can be visible to the point of ruining the experience on lower quality displays. The thing is, the measurement of its transition from full dark to full bright isn’t necessarily the best way to measure a screen’s ability to cancel out motion blur. In fact, speedy transitioning from grey values to other grey values is far more common on your typical televised image, as such, it’s ability to go from one grey to another is a better metric out for measuring motion blur avoidance. What’s more, it takes far longer with most displays to make the more subtle transitions in brightness, sometimes 3 or 4 times as long than it takes to go from full on to full off. As a result, a 1 millisecond response time display could very well be more prone to motion blur than a 6 millisecond response display with a better ability to change within the mid-ranged values.
While it’s overall a good metric to go by, there’s no denying that response time is based upon faulty reasoning and misinformation. It is absolutely best to see the displays you’re buying in action, and to really scrutinize the difference between their pictures during long camera pans and high action sequences to get a feel for how they handle motion blur.
On to our other culprit. Easily one of the most uninformative ‘Tech Specs’ is Viewing Angle. What it means is fairly simple. It’s a measurement of the angle you can view the screen and still make out a decent image. When you’re viewing at a really shallow angle on the screen, like the latecomer to a football party who has to sit on the edge of the couch or to the side of the television cabinet, you’re not likely to see the full quality of the screen, and Viewing Angle is supposed to tell you just how far the poor lug can get from the middle of the screen’s display.
The problem is that manufacturers decide to change their definition of what ‘seeing the picture’ means in their measurement of viewing angles. So while one may say it has an incredible, semi-circular, 180 degree viewing angle (meaning you could see it in all its glory anywhere in front of it, even standing right beside the edge) you’ll more than likely be seeing an image that looks far worse if you move even a little bit away from the center of the screen, any more than say, 45 degrees. The real measurement? look at the screen for yourself. Stand far back, move around it in a semi-circle and see how long it takes for the screen to lose its contrast and quality as you walk in a wide arc toward the side of the screen.

Thus, you get figures like 500,000,000 to 1, or even Infinity to 1, which is technically possible, but also total bull. The typical ratio for screens, even the greatest screens, is something like 1,500:1 to 2,000:1, and very little more. Anything much more than that is just blowing smoke.
